– Vintages 1959 – 1944 –
The DECADE WITH TWO ‘VINTAGES OF THE CENTURY’: 1945 & 1947
1959
Catastrophic powdery mildew, nevertheless good quality from the minuscule harvest volume.
1958
Record harvest with satisfactory quality, crisp and fruit-forward wines.
1957
Good quality thanks to healthy grapes, medium volume.
1956
Severe frost damage in winter resulting in a very meagre harvest, which yielded wines of very good quality.
1955
Good yield with attractive quality.
1954
Very large volume of middling quality.
1953
Red wines extremely deep in colour and very fine, small volume.
1952
Good quality, small volume.
1951
Middling quality, satisfying harvest volume.
1950
Large volume but poor quality.
1949
Very good vintage with low yields.
1948
Modest volume and middling quality.
1947
Ideal climatic conditions produced a ‘vintage of the century’.
1946
Above-average good vintage.
1945
Early harvest (picking commenced on 1 September!) of excellent quality.
1944
Oldest vintage in the Kollwentz Estate vinotheque. Some bottles of Spätlese-quality were buried by the grandparents, thus surviving the Russian occupation. The next-to-last bottle was drunk at the wedding of Anton and Margarete Kollwentz in 1961.
